Mixtape Review: PinkPantheress - to hell with it

'To Hell With It' looks into PinkPantheress' fleeting yet melancholic sparks.

The ‘breakout’ spark of an artist has been generated in different spots at different times. From the small gigs, MTV, pitchfork, SoundCloud, youtube, so on and so forth. These were some of the spots where an artist can burst out of their bubble and have a chance to slide through the spotlight with their music at hand. With the recent applications such as TikTok, such breakouts may occur here… Which leads to the breakout of PinkPantheress.

Her steady growth in the TikTok scene with her snippets and songs that carry the spirit of the Garage and Drum & Bass genre has swooped through the roof, possibly influencing more casual listeners to check out the genres characterized by fluttery samples and rapid quick drum patterns that will put you in a loop.

Her debut mixtape is no different. Each song goes under 1 or 2 minutes but carries a brief sticky melodic core, flighty singing, introspective lyrical nuggets, and a narrow sample that loops under rhythmic drums. Despite the project being a mixtape, it does suffer from stiff melodies, a slightly messy album structure, and the need to lengthen some of the tracks to expand upon their musical and lyrical ideas. Even still, the mixtape provides enough striking moments that hit at the right spots, and PinkPantheress is an artist you need to look out for because you might not know when she will strike again.
