In letting each composite speak for themselves, Lucy Bedroque finds more ways to get nifty. ‘Unmusique’ is a wallop and a hush all at once, bringing vividly chaotic yet hooky melodies and soundscapes in cutting succession.

‘Unmusique’ is what happens when fragmented pieces are filled with every creative mode as much as possible. Amidst the layout of brash spoutings and pensive thoughts, Lucy Bedroque makes sure that there is a sense of style, humor, and flash that chains the lyricism to something that doesn’t go too ridiculous, yet always aims to pour some emotion and flavor into it. It’s a brand of lyrical focus that can become scattershot and clumsy at worst, but also becomes quite expressive and snappy at its best.

Lucy Bedroque continues to stretch more of what he has delivered from past projects, now entering crowded pockets of digicore, rage, and even pop rap production that’s brought by an assortment of producers. Mixing balance aside, the strength that ‘Unmusique’ carries throughout is Lucy Bedroque’s potent ability to pull together hypnotic melodies that always complement the vocal effects and vocal layerings around his expressive voice. The ragged, fuzzy production of “Unmusique”, “Fenty Face”, and “Ouija” shows that Lucy Bedroque can bring some fractured attitude into the performances; the focus on dance grooves on “Ignorant” and “One Of Us Is Lying” is a nice contrasting addition to the album’s walloping sound; “G6 Anthem”, “Tout Naturel”, and “2010 Justin Bieber” are bangers that offer a lot of sweet melodic construction; and “Cara Mia” and “Yes, You May” strikes as some of Lucy Bedroque’s interesting cuts to date, with the former’s cascading synths swirling around his dramatic vocals, and the latter’s lilting minimalism that lifts his fluttering cooing.

‘Unmusique’ is a mixtape that picks apart every feeling, sound, and melody that Lucy Bedroque can think of and puts it all together in his own music box. Spinning the lever and letting those ideas flood through in small patches, allowing the composite compositions, production, and lyrical phrases to speak through with volume. If music makes the elements come through as a whole, ‘Unmusique’ disembodies that musical unity and then lets each of the components express themselves in reckless, colorful abandon.
