Embracing everything fun and bright, FKA Twigs put out her fun and joyous record to date.
FKA Twigs has been in conflicting places ever since her record in 2019, ‘Magdalene’. That depression and the hurt that she felt during her abusive relationship with Shia Labeouf was a hard time for her, especially when she had already written too much about her fluctuating relationships for her past two albums.
But she has been in an album drive starting around 2020, where she worked alongside El Guincho for her mixtape and gained more hyped attention from those who loved her work when the lead single, ‘Tears In The Club’ was released last year.
Now that the mixtape came through, it’s refreshing to hear FKA Twigs releasing her most positive, accessible, and playful record to date. That might alienate those who wanted her to push her experimental touches, but this record feels necessary for her mostly, a love letter to herself and to her friends, family, and loved ones that have supported her throughout her struggles and hardships.
This is FKA Twigs having the most fun in her life, and her vocals, production, and melodies do solidify that upbeat, club feel. Embracing Dancehall and UK hip-hop tunes this time around while still balanced towards her Alternative R&B and Art Pop comfort zone, all filled with alluring hooks, balanced sound mix, and FKA Twigs vocals that diversify as she playfully coos around this record.
It’s not entirely perfect, there are some collaborators that don’t elevate their performances that well, and there are definitely production chops that are fine, but not exactly outstanding.
Overall, this is FKA Twig's most starry-eyed and positive record to date. All brimming with light, love, and care that FKA Twig’s really wanted to have for herself, just like the astrology signs that she kept embracing throughout the record.
