Pretty, but a retread of similar sounds.
Going back to Doss' debut EP was quite something. 4 tracks that are brimming with spacious, bright house cuts that were certainly a bit influential and unique, but it felt like an exercise for something bigger...
And for 7 years of silence, we get another EP from her. An EP that I certainly like quite a bit, but it feels like a slight step forward rather than a huge leap. Look is one example, where it feels like it's something that PC Music could be working on only with Doss' signature sound sliding in with the drum worth and some of the synth textures, and while On Your Mind does have some nice moments with the wobbling beat, the shuffling groove on the percussion, and the shimmering synths that spike and sweep through at some spots, I just wished it went a big more bigger. But beyond that, I did like Puppy and Strawberry the most, with the former has sweet, fluid melodies accompanied with the rapid, pumping drums and piano lines that has this hazy textures on them, while the latter has this slow yet alluring start before it progresses into a wonderful breakdown with the sharp drums patterns and bouncy synth notes that really works well.
Look, there are glimpses of greatness in this EP that make it a bit better than the self-titled EP. While this feels like an extension to what she's done before, Doss still shows that her formula still works wonders, and if this means that we will get an album in the works, I'm looking forward to what newer spaces she will deliver.
