A retro album for the ages.
For the past decade, there were two artists in different spectrums that have been touching into soul and r&b with marvelous ease. On the underground side is Anderson Paak and on the mainstream side is Bruno Mars. While what they step upon with their music is different, you can definitely see how these two gentlemen are able to exude such showmanship and charm with their performance. Not only that, but their musicianship towards their music shows the talent and the understanding of what they do, and there might be a chance that a collaboration between these two would be marvelous… But a rare chance given their busy schedules.
However, the quietness of the pandemic somehow made these two talented musicians finally collaborate for this side project debut, ‘An Evening with Silk Sonic’. A brief yet extravagant display of the wondrous musicianship, the charming performances, and the knowledgeable understanding of the retro 70s funk, soul, & r&b that they are uplifting in their outstanding attempt in this album. Personal nitpicks may come towards just wanting more and adding a few instruments to some of the songs to give more melodic layers, but those minor nitpicks are compensated by organic production and instrumentation, incredible chemistry between Bruno and Anderson, consistently witty lyricism, and layered and infectious melodies and tones all throughout the album.
The overall product is not just a tribute to the great musicians and era that Bruno Mars and Anderson Paak were inspired by, but also just the album that a lot of people needed post-pandemic. Silky sleek and diverse 70’s retro album that you will enjoy in the first few notes, and possibly a gateway that will make you listen to those influences and deeply appreciate the music of the past. Some might say that this might not be original, but when the music is this good and infectious, who the hell cares?
