Album Review: Madeon - Good Faith

A slight step forward.

This is just frustrating.

After listening through his debut, 'Adventures', Madeon's sound does not really captivate me, nor his melodies and his content. I find it quite safe and a bit barren, and I would definitely say that 'Worlds' by Porter Robinson is a bit better than this.

For this sophomore record of his... Madeon just does not evolve here, I mean sure, the vocal samples are a bit placed nicely at spots, but his formula does not change for the most part. His choices over the vocal effects are just unbearable and paired with the choppy compositions and blaring production choices, it just does not mesh well with the cleaner vocal samples that he uses in most of the songs. And going for this Nu-disco, rather funky sound... It's derivative and he does not do it well, and if I were to listen to these sounds, I would just listen through some of Charlie Puth's funkier touches on his sophomore album, or Calvin Harris' sweeter dabble on this Nu-disco sound on his Funk Wav Bounces Vol 1 album. And for the lyrics, it's painfully underwritten and a bit empty, focusing on some sort of love that is not really loving him back? It feels a bit vague.

It's an album that I just extremely frustrating the more listens I gave this. I liked the groovier sounds that Madeon touches on some of the songs, but even then those sounds are just overpowered by vocals, production, and composition that just felt overblown, overbearing, and just makes feel exhausted by the time I finish listening through the album. But that's just me.
