Album Review: Lucy Dacus - Home Video

Lucy Dacus reels back and reflects upon old memories in 'Home Video'.

Reeling things back after growing up seems difficult to some. Nostalgia fills your mind with both good and bad memories, and it reflects upon what could’ve changed, what didn’t change, and the general weird feeling of returning back to old memories is the approach Lucy Dacus did on her latest album, ‘Home Video’.

It’s an introspection towards her memories in Richmond and her feelings towards it, musing through relationships, religion, sexuality, and the darker parts in those memories that she has to wrestle with. All presented with less polish and more punch as Lucy’s deep vocals are accompanied by acoustic and rock stompers and different effects on certain tracks. It’s structured in a fractured way but does justify the thoughts that Lucy has to process towards the complicated memories she has of her hometown.

She hits the right spot when it comes to reflecting upon past memories in this album. It’s difficult and odd, but it allows everyone to learn and realize something during those times. This album reveals gut-punches after gut-punches thanks to the punchy melodies, performances, and writing.
