Album Review: Jack Ingram, Miranda Lambert & Jon Randall - The Marfa Tapes

Jack Ingram, Miranda Lambert, and Jon Randall went out to the desert and recorded an album that's both comforting and refreshing.

Under this collaborative album, Jack Ingram, Miranda Lambert, and Jon Randall are singing, strumming, and gilding their way on this 15 track album with such comfort and glee. Recording the collection of songs under the wilderness to give it a lo-fi, organic feel where the vocal clarity, rough guitar strums, background noise, and left in banters within the trio make up the entirety of the album. Said mood is consistent all throughout the album, so finding the highlights will be tough considering there’s not really a bad song here. I tend to gravitate towards the songs that grip me the most in their lyrics and their compositions, the quicker instrumental cadence of ‘Geraldene’ paired with the pissed off lyricism, ‘Two-Step Down To Texas’ with its jolly guitar tones and lyrical musings about Texas, the aptly titled ‘Homegrown Tomatoes’ with its lively guitar strums and easy going lyrics, and ‘Ghost’ with the details of letting go amidst a fluttering guitar passage.

The only downside that this album has is that certain tracks ran short before they could develop into something more and certain tracks didn’t grip me melodically, and a part of me wished for a bit more melodic harmonies that they pass off from time to time. But even then, these songs are still good especially with the trio bringing out the best in crafting this sparsely recorded, comfortingly performed record.
