Gavin Turek dons her alter ego in her debut album.
Gavin Turek’s approach towards retro funk & R&B is a straightforward one in her debut album, ‘MADAME GOLD’. An album that is sensible, warm, and empowering all throughout, Gavin Turek dons the ‘Madame Gold’ alter ego and flaunts it as she muses about loving hard, breaking up, and finding senses of strength amidst her vulnerabilities. Her soothing singing works well, paired with the production and instrumentation that offers a lot of organic percussions, bass, and keyboards amidst additional vocoders and synths that adds to the subtle atmosphere. But the slow to mid-tempo melodies smear from song to song that it can be easy to put most of these songs in the background and while the lyricism works well with this brand of tasteful R&B, it doesn’t pop out of the paper all that much, leaving the album ending up solid, but not great.
Nonetheless, if you do prefer this side of R&B, Gavin Turek’s debut may be for you. Consistently well-produced, well-performed, and well-written. It just does not break expectations for me personally.
