Album Review: Arca - KiCk ii

While not as astounding as Kick i, 'Kick ii' delivers from Arca's solid experimentation with reggaeton.

One word that describes this album is: Accessible

After Kick i, Arca released the other parts of her body of work starting November 31 to December 3. Kick ii still follows Kick i the most, where the project ends up as a proper sequel to Kick i. Embracing more of Arca’s reggaeton experimentation besides the usual oddball tracks in the midsection and a much welcome revision of Sia’s vocals with her own stuttering production approach towards accessible song structures. The lyrics still are in the same ballpark as Kick i, but are framed as kinkier and more celebratory towards her trans community.

Besides the Sia collaborated track and the approachable tracks in the first half, the experimental detours don’t blow the water unlike the experimental detours that Arca has done in kick i. It would’ve been better if Arca kept the streak of her own reggaeton stylisms on the rest of the album as those off-kilter cuts in the midsection sticks out as a clash rather than a compliment of those accessible cuts. Still a nice addition to Arca’s work and may possibly be the most accessible kick album of the bunch, it just could’ve been better if there were more of these reggaeton tracks all across the album.
